Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States. It is a game where players bolt down the field hoping to score points for their team. As this is happening the other team is attempting to hold up this process in attempts to gain points for there own team. This can cause violent collisions which can cause players' bodies to buckle. A game of football is a timed event with 4 quarters each lasting for 15 minutes. At the end of the 60 minutes of play the game is finished. But over the course of those 60 min both teams coaches overlook their teams to make sure that there are no oversights that may cause their team to lose that game.
American football is much like American language, since they both have contradictions. One example of these contradictions in the game of football is that it not really played with your feet, but more with your hands. This is like the English language because there are many words that also have contradictions in there different meanings. These words are called Contronyms, or words with contradictory meanings. Some of these terms are:
Bolt: To secure, or to flee
Buckle: To connect, or to break or collapse
Finished: Completed, or destroyed
Give out: To provide, or to stop because of a lack of supply
Hold up: To support, or to impede
Overlook: To supervise, or to neglect
Oversight: Monitoring, or failing to oversee

Your blog entry is great! I think your topic of contranyms would make a great lesson, so if you want, you may use it as the topic for your lesson.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Idea for a lesson. I think there are a lot of ESL kids with little knowledge of American footbal, and this type of reading may appeal to them if they are motivated to learn about a sport their friends are fans of.
ReplyDeleteThe excersise was great in that it was challenging content but the mthods f circle an answer if low anxiety fr students.
