How about them Yankess

The term "Yankee" and its contracted form "Yank" have several interrelated meanings, all referring to people from at least the northern United States. Its various senses depend on the scope of context. Most broadly:

  • Within the United States, it usually refers to people from the north, largely those who fought for the regions in the Union side of the American Civil War, but also of those with New England cultural ties, such as descendants from colonial New England settlers, wherever they live. The speech dialect of New England is called "Yankee" or "Yankee dialect."
  • Within Southern American English, "Yankee" refers to Northeners.
  • Outside the United States, "Yank" is used informally to refer to any American, including Southerners and minorities.

This term has taken on a different meaning in New York City. The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in The Bronx borough of New York City that competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the American League's (AL) East Division. One of the AL's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles. The team moved to New York City in 1903 and became the New York Highlanders, before taking the "Yankees" as their official name in 1913.

PUNCTUATION POINTS

A written message is much clearer when the sentences have appropriate punctuation. Punctuation provides structure to writing and so enables the writer to separate ideas and refine the information being presented. While there is some freedom to choose how to use punctuation, there are certain standard practices and all students need to be familiar with these. Below are common forms of punctuation that you should be able to use appropriately.

  1. Yankees are one my favorite baseball teams. Teaching ESl students about baseball is always fun. Many of them have never seen the sport played in their country. So for them, this is always a "wow" moment.
